The Five Background
Production Background
The Five premiered on July 11, 2011, on the Fox News Channel as a temporary summer replacement for Glenn Beck's 5:00 p.m. program.
The format brought together five rotating co-hosts with differing viewpoints to discuss the day's biggest political stories, current events, entertainment, and popular culture.
Rather than relying on a single anchor, the ensemble approach encouraged lively debate and spontaneous conversation, quickly distinguishing the program from traditional cable news shows.
From Summer Experiment to Ratings Success
Although initially scheduled to run for only five weeks, the program attracted strong ratings and positive viewer response. Fox News announced in October 2011 that The Five would become a permanent weekday series.
Over the following years, its panel evolved as hosts joined and departed, but the show's core format remained consistent: a fast-paced roundtable featuring opinion, analysis, interviews, and audience-friendly discussions.
The program has been produced from the Fox News headquarters at 1211 Avenue of the Americas in New York City, first from Studio D and later from Studio F (now Studio M), using a modern circular discussion set designed to encourage interaction among the panelists.
Move to Prime Time
Following the departure of Bill O'Reilly in April 2017, Fox News temporarily moved The Five from its long-standing 5:00 p.m. ET slot to 9:00 p.m. ET beginning on May 1, 2017.
The move placed the show in a highly competitive prime-time position while Jesse Watters launched a new program in the 5 p.m. hour. Viewer demand for the original early-evening format remained strong, and on September 25, 2017,
The Five returned to its traditional 5:00 p.m. ET timeslot, where it has continued to rank among the highest-rated programs in cable news.
Deceased Panelist
Bob Beckel (1948–2022) was an original co-host from the show's debut in 2011, Beckel served as the liberal voice on the panel. He left in 2015, returned in 2017, and departed again later that year. He died on February 20, 2022, at the age of 73.
