Live ! with Regis and Kathie Lee went into national broadcast in 1988 and was an instant hit.
The morning talk show was known to be edgy, playful, and enjoyable and although the show seems rather dated now, it was cutting edge back in 1988, when there was little other choice in broadcast TV and cable TV was still in its infancy. Regis
Philbin hosted the show with his sidekick Kathie Lee Gifford. Entertainment Weekly described the duo as "an agreeable match". Live with Regis and Kathie Lee had impressive national ratings and dominated American television in the late eighties, catapulting both Philbin and Gifford to national stardom.
This version of the show ran for a total of 12 years on ABC, when Gifford left the show and Regis added Kelly Ripa as the new co-host.

During Philbin's time as a solo host, he tried out a variety of potential co-stars. Kathie Lee Gifford was officially replaced by Kelly Ripa on February 5, 2001. Gifford went on to host Today with Hota Kotb, a show that sometimes competes with Live!, due to the similar time slot.

Gilford's departure from Live with Regis and Kathie Lee in 2000 took one of television's favorite personalities off the air.
Gilford struggled with personal battles including her husband's somewhat public affair and attacks on alleged labor abuses linked to her clothing line. Kathie Lee decided to leave the morning show to pursue other acting and singing opportunities.
Since her departure, Gilford has returned on Live! on occasion- to promote her book Just When I Thought I'd Dropped My Last Egg, and for the show's 20th Anniversary. Kathie Lee was also the host of Kathie Lee & Hoda alongside Hoda Kotb from 2008 to 2019. The show airs on NBC one hour after Live! appears on ABC.
The show, also known as the fourth-hour NBC show, is tacked on to NBC's Today Show.
