Dancing With The Stars Background

When it was first announced on ABC's TV show schedule, Dancing With The Stars sounded like a colossal joke. A TV show featuring washed-up celebrities cha-cha-cha-ing with professional dancers ... really? But the gimmicky TV show soon became a breakout hit and a topic of much water cooler chatter and media attention. Hosted by Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, Dancing With The Stars is kind of like the fancy footwork version of the Fox hit American Idol. Like American Idol, Dancing With The Stars is based on a British reality TV show that has spawned numerous international versions. And like American Idol, Dancing With The Stars has a panel of judges (Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli) that evaluate weekly dance performances from each couple, while the TV viewing public gets to vote for their favorites.

Dancing With The Stars has reinvented the careers of numerous performers from Drew Lachey to Joey Fatone. And not only has it given third and fourth tier stars newfound attention, but it has shown the public that these celebrities have a totally unexpected talent. Finding out that Kristi Yamaguchi could dance wasn't a huge surprise, but Emmitt Smith? Seinfeld's John O'Hurley? Joey Lawrence? Who would've thought?! Other Dancing With The Stars contestants include unlikely names such as Mario Lopez, Evander Holyfield, Cloris Leachman, Marie Osmond, Wayne Newton, Susan Lucci, Lance Bass, Marlee Matlin, Lisa Rinna, and Monica Seles. With each new season, Dancing With The Stars continues to bring out the hidden talents of singers, sports stars, actors, and other celebs, while also showing off the tremendous skill of professional dancers like Cheryl Burke and Julianne Hough.
